What Does a DAC Do?
A DAC (digital-to-analog converter) takes digital audio โ from your computer, phone, TV or console โ and turns it into an analog signal your headphones or speakers can play. Without a good DAC, you hear whatever cheap converter chip your device happens to use.
Why it matters: laptop and phone DACs are usually noisy and thin-sounding. A dedicated DAC like the LP1 PLUS ($199) immediately improves clarity, detail, and background noise.
What Does an Amplifier Do?
An amplifier takes the (weak) analog signal and boosts it to drive headphones or speakers. The amp matters most when your headphones are demanding โ high impedance, low sensitivity, or planars.
What Does a Preamp Do?
A preamp selects inputs, controls volume, and routes signal to powered speakers or a separate power amp. In desktop setups, the preamp is usually integrated into the DAC or the amp.
